In my quest to find new ways to waste my time on the internet, I often find myself playing various online games. I don't usually look for them. I just haphazardly find them and six hours later, realize I did nothing productive with my day. So it happens the other day, that during a Google search for gardening tips, I ended up playing
Viva Caligula! on the Adult Swim website. It was surprisingly entertaining.

The setup is pretty basic. You play Caligula, and must hack your way through seven areas of Rome and it's peoples to find 26 weapons and gain access to the palace, aka the Orgy Room (yeah). The weapons range from hatchets and swords, to summoning lions and stunning the citizenry with your manhood (yup). And yes, you can actually scream at your computer to help increase your score, via the microphone. The Adult Swim website promises you that you aren't being recorded, but oh, how I wish they had lied. The entertainment value lies mainly in the concept of the game as you can breeze through it fairly easily. But the reason I am enamored with the game is it's art direction, which is really very stylish. Everything from the animations of the terrified Romans, to the background art, to the loading screens, and even the music for each area, is cohesive and well done. I especially liked Caligula himself, and the little facial animations on the status bar:

I almost wish the game were deeper so I could enjoy the art even more, but then again, there's only so much debauchery I can take in a flash game. However, if anyone can name any artists that contributed to this game in particular, I'd appreciate it!
